- Finishing up module4 of 2nd course in Google UX Design today. Time is running out on my access so... faster!!!
Really wanted to skill up with Figma at the very least, may need to skip ahead to that.
- [NOTE] gohacker.info domain expires on 23rd of November. Not renewing, so need to port to video-msgs.site
- May want to substitute a freebie domain for gohacker.info... Maybe make its pages chaos.isupon.us. Would still need to update a lot.
- Every page that uses a websockets server would have to be changed... hmm
October 23rd, 2026
- Google UX Design - More ideation phase - including Competitive Audits.
- Got a simple modal div working on video-msgs.site page
- [TODO] next todo for /chat is to put /login and /register into modals so a form element can hide the passwords
Should still be able to use a slightly modified version of my bookmarklet to fast-login...
October 22nd, 2026
- Two days until mod4 is due - Google UX Design.
added more notes
October 22nd, 2026
- Getting back to Google UX Design - gotta make up Tuesday which was lost to keep my streak.
- Jenn and Arielle are coming to see me today for my birthday, early, since Jenn is gonna be in AZ next week.
- [TODO] Later I need to copy and update various pages from gohacker to victory. Being without my pages to work on
when the internet is down is just terrible. Worse that no socials lol!
- Ok, iphone counts a webpage as a PWA (and allows push notifications) if it's saved to your home page, good to know.
- I wonder if I can detect when a user is logged in to a page and only send notifications when they are...
October 21st, 2026
- Didn't get internet back until afternoon about an hour after mom and dad got back from Ft Smith
October 20th, 2026
- No internet all day =(
- Managed to find info on my phone about .style.display='none' but that's it
- [TODO] implement a modal login/register window for chat server and maybe a change password modal as well.
October 19th, 2026
- First day of early voting in Arkansas. Polls open at 8am
- Working on finishing module 3 today for my Google UX Design course.
October 18th, 2026
- Another cold morning. Internet off and on this morning, finally back and hopefully staying on at 8:30am
- Have module 3 due tomorrow for Google UX Design course.
- Hit 19 week streak today.
- [TODO] backup more pages from gohacker to victory in case of more internet outage... Copied /multipass and /chat yesterday
October 17th, 2026
- Cold morning 41F !!!
- Finished up 2nd mod of the 2nd class today.
- I keep looking thru my saved ai chats for this one line:
CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS pgcrypto;
- I did need to install python3-devel, postgresql-devel, and a couple or 3 pips to get chat-server working locally on victory again.
October 16th, 2026
- Google UX Design - mod i'm currently on has graded assignment due on the 17th.
- Idea for my video-msgs.site
October 15th, 2026
- Fixed my make-index.sh script to display img links to the mp4's of videos i made with /rec
- Mildly interesting shell line to get the date for each one too (original webm, not the mp4, which were made later using a ffmpeg cmd)
- I don't have automatic thumbnail creation/saving working with /rec yet, but it won't be much of a stretch now.
- Takes me a bit longer when I don't ask the AI lol. Funny that.
- Current process for adding an mp4:
I use /rec to record it, which auto-uploads when I click Stop Recording
I use /pick-frame to get a thumbnail out of that video. I do manually edit /pick-frame to set the video's name.
Save the thumbnail to my harddrive, then upload to uploads directory and rename it to match the webm/mp4
Manually create the mp4 before running make-index.sh, which looks for mp4 names
make-index.sh to rebuild the index.html page with any new mp4/thumbnails.
- [TODO] automate that process fully. Then, make it work for users logged in as other than admin...

- Debating what to work on with AI today. The silicon wall, working with AI. Sometimes the wall wins.
- Claude has repeatedly proven that it can make ffmpeg do what needs doing. Using what already works beats wasting a day's tokens
every single time.
This command is what works for streaming an image (40px by 40px) and an mp3 to my webcam relay using jsmpeg.min.js in the browser:
ffmpeg -loop 1 -framerate 25 -i black.png -re -i some_testing.mp3 -vf "scale=40:40,format=yuv420p" -r 25 -af "volume=enable='lt(t,9)':volume=0" \
-threads 1 -f mpegts -codec:v mpeg1video -b:v 300k -minrate 300k -maxrate 300k -bufsize 600k -bf 0 -g 25 -codec:a mp2 -b:a 128k -ar 44100 \
-ac 2 -shortest -flush_packets 1 tcp://gohacker.info:5000
- the -af "volume=enable='lt(t,9)':volume=0" section was to blank out the first 9 seconds which sounds like white noise, before the
vocals start at 9.3 or so, for one particular mp3 i tested on. Removing -minrate 300k reduced the padding and made sending it use
less bandwidth. Compression=None added to the relay's websockets.serve(...) made bytes sent and received match up nicely.
- my port at 5000 only accepts ingress from my home ip, so no one else can play songs on it.
- This is the image, black.png, just a 40x40 pixel solid black image:

- Google UX Design - will finish mod1 of the 2nd course today and start mod2.
- It might rain later. Should start early to get done before internet/electricity goes out again...
- Updates include kernel 7.2.10-300 for F45 beta. Updating victory and gohacker.info now, reboots to follow.
Then my laptop (which needs a better name than laptop lol)
- Rebooted victory, laptop and gohacker.info - all updated with today's kernel version (f45beta and f43 depending)
October 12th, 2026
- Tried to get a single mp3 to stream to my browser, same machine, using websockets. Used up all free tokens on Claude.
No success whatsoever.
- Google Ux Design - got lessons almost done for module 1 of the 2nd course, right on track to finish mod1 tomorrow.
October 11th, 2026
- Fixed a problem with missing passwords in chat server js. Empty passwords were getting hashed and sent for /login and /register.
- Ended up adding another function just to insert a warning into chat for the user of that page to see.
- After chatting with Gemini and Claude about potential side effects, I added a line to hashPass on /chat to normalize the password
preventing oddness should anyone use variant keyboards that might change certain characters like accented vowels etc.
Should be a no-op in most cases.
- Installed or tried to install my cms on my new fedora-45. Brokenness from upgrading my password crypto/storage is the
gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving
- My /register form from gohacker.info is the most reliable way to add a user. Owner of site must be id=1
Had to add the ipv6%whatever string to my auth sub cuz evidently i'm not hitting it from an ipv4 ip anymore lol
Fun fun - that changed since fedora 44.
- My initial change-admin-pw.pl script worked but installed the hash, versus a crypted version of the hash. /register fixed that
once I was logged in again and able to install it... Fun.
October 10th, 2026
- Google UX Design - made good progress on this. Have until 12th to finish graded assignment for mod1 of 2nd course.
- Standardized my nav bar look and feel across my domains, using same w3.css from w3schools and same css for tables...
- Re-opened port 8766 so my /chat page on gohacker.info can be used by anyone.
both /register and /login send the password protected in a sha256 hash rather than in plain text
It does require https to work, given the function in hashPass() to make the sha256 hash now.
October 9th, 2026
- Google UX Design - working on mod4 and picking first portfolio project prompt.
- Think this one will do:
Design an app and a responsive website for a bank that help customers select,
set up, and manage a personal bank account without visiting in person.
October 8th, 2026
- Got /login user pw to function correctly in my chat server on gohacker.info. It now longer drops a username into the id column
either lol. Doing /login user pw while logged in as another user works as intended and switches users.
No more dropping pw in plain text into the websockets log or anywhere it will get logged. Different users send different
sha256 hashes too which get crypted inside postgresql to be saved in the user_data table.
Takeaways (as the AI are oh so fond of saying)
-- I learned more about async and await in javascript (think i might actually understand that now)
-- I read up a bit about ON CONFLICT in postgresql
-- Spent a lot longer on fixing login/register in my chat-server.py & /chat page but it works again now.
-- That makes 3 of 4 major fixes necessary complete, after my auth upgrade change lol.
- Been copying the important scripts from my old f44 homedirs over to new ones. Thinks like y1 and y2, brb, and fox. All of those
are to shorten the commands I use daily to something faster. alt-tab, fox, cntrl-D before firefox pops up and alt-# to next window
after it starts. I suppose I should just look at i3 config to start up firefox and about 3-4 shells in separate virtual desktops
but that seems like more work lol. In the first shell window I also start up an ssh-agent and save it's shell variables so i can
re-use it in the other terminal windows. ssh-agent > .z ; source .z; ssh-add Some of that was automatic but my bash programming
was lacking and it refused to ask me for the passphrase every morning, consistently. So lately, i've been doing the manual labor of
the ssh-add myself. So much drudgery!
- Fall is usual my least favorite season although visually I do like it at least 2nd best. It's just that the holidays bring me so down.
Good time for a new video game, but that's been sidelined for nearly a year now. Go me
October 7th, 2026
- Cut a 30GB section off my D drive under win10, figured I could run f45 next to f44 without problems
For various definitions of 'without problems' - again i was wrong. f45 does boot up just fine of course
But now, f44 (at least the first of 4 kernel versions (no number showing in f45's boot window)) just sits and spins.
Am thinking I may have hit an old rescue line somehow... Going to try #2, see if that spins
- Despite my days 'off' from classes, I tend to do more programming on them than class days, even when the class has a lot of programming.
I managed a trip to the local Harps grocery. S'bout it. Until I bolluxed my computer again lol.
October 6th, 2026
- My Friday as far as classes go. Used be the day before my ozempic injection, so to avoid studying and feeling really nauseous,
I'd take the dose on 'my Saturday' morning. I don't get quite as much nausea now with the low low dose.
October 5th, 2026
- [DONE] fixed an odd bug in POSTS to /api/add_page where /daily_notes_October wasn't getting updated properly.
- It only seemed to effect this particular page...
- Completely forgot what else I worked on that I was trying to change this page to make a note...
- Oh yeah, /pick-frame, a new page. It takes one of the webm videos I saved and picks a frame 60 frames in
and displays two canvas with that image, one 1/2 size and one 1/4 size for picking a frame to use as thumbs.
Quality is good for my 640x480 ancient webcam, might just grab some random frame...
- [DONE 7:10am] added a button to /pick-frame to show video.currentTime
- [TODO] Add a button to upload one or the other thumbnail... also pick a different webm...
- Tried his line out converting webm to mp4:
ffmpeg -i input.webm -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
but this one ended up being better:
ffmpeg -i input.webm -c:v libopenh264 -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
October 4th, 2026
- Got logged back into all 6-7 of my domains served by my server, needed /api/login for that since it has the
dummy tag gohacker.info for the delete_page subroutine to replace with that domains values.
/api/delete also had gohacker.info and /daily_notes_October too to indicate which page it's deleting.
- Week 17 Streak on coursera!
- Maybe new breakage: page gets logged out without going to /api/logout...
[DONE] Doh, it's just the page loading in-securely by default - no cookies = no login duh!
- Got /api/delete page updated after about 20 tries, delete from pages where id=blah; perl load-delete_page.pl;
restart (cuz systemctl restart httpd is too long) retry delete x, first do /x?edit to recreate it when delete
worked but didn't update the page lol
- The api-delete-page.txt file I load into the /api/delete slot in the cms had some cruft that needed tidying.
Think I finally got that done in the /api/login page lol.
- Delete is now working pretty well.
- Now breakfast, then study time some more [7:15am]
- [DONE 1:40pm] fixed /api/login
October 3rd, 2026
- Delete puts the result menu in the result div at the top of the page now.
- manually reset id for username='admin' in user_data again GRRR
cms3=> update user_data set id=1 where username='admin';
UPDATE 1
cms3=> select id,url,active,domain_id from pages where url ~ '/daily_notes_October' and active;
id | url | active | domain_id
------+----------------------+--------+-----------
4545 | /daily_notes_October | t | 10
- Pages went back to only having the last version set 'active' again. Need to find that bug...
- Looks like I need more fixes to add_page - last 3-4 of this one were all left 'active' GRRR
- Ok, finally got gohacker.info/login working again, using sha-256 hashes sent to cms and then
verifying that against the bcrypt hash stored for that user in the database.
- This is the code that works for verifying:
$sth=$dbh->prepare( "select crypt(?,?)" );
$sth->execute($pw,$cry);
@row= $sth->fetchrow_array;
- My bug was basically trying to create a new bcrypted version of the sha-256 hash each time, which of course
never matched once i fixed my login sub to actually check it correctly. /register was saving it correctly
in the table all along.
- Finished module 2 of the first course of Google UX Design today. Module 3 about design sprints starting oct4
October 2nd, 2026
- fixing this crappy cms
- noted that forgetting to set a uuid when registering an account bolluxed things up too, grrr!
October 1st, 2026
- Broke authentication on my site real good today, trying to upgrade to $2a$12$ bcrypt hashes in the db
- Worked out the correct selects and inserts, now just have to rewrite the decade old mess in my cms to
correctly use it...
- Registered new domain name today too, video-msgs.site
old daily notes (sept & aug)
